Two living and one dead: won the first prize in a great Nordic novel competition in 1931. Later followed classics like: "The man from the gas station"(novel) and "A journey through the night"(play). Sigurd Christiansen (1891-1947) was called the new Ibsen and had a huge audience. This important name in Norwegian and Nordic history of literature lived all of his life in Drammen. He worked in the local post office, anonymous. All together he wrote 16 novels and 6 plays. Topics like justice, guild and "the life never lived" stands central in his writing. Two living and one dead is also dealing with these topics. The play also have the tempo of a crime novel, excitement and surprising turns.
Two living and one dead: A post office, three colleagues is exposed to a robbery. One of them, Kvisthus, is killed. Lydersen gets a head bandage "that suits him". Berger doesn't get a scratch, but is the one who gives the money to the robber. Kvistus is buried and gets praise a long the way. Lydersen becomes the hero. Berger is pushed out in the cold.
"Sigurd Christiansen was encouraged again and again, by the theatre directors of his time, to dramatise the novel, but he was already lost in the writing of a new book. Not until today has Two living and one dead been done on stage. A great event for Norwegian and Nordic theatre." (Tor Bosmann Larsen, after the opening night 12th of February 2000).
