Polar

Two men in a deserted place. They are struggling to stay alive under extreme circumstances. A piece of intense drama spiced with cunning humour.

In the summer of 1893 the polar ship Fram sailed from quay in Christiania (former Oslo). The boat was to be frozen in by the ice, for then to winter there and be pulled by the constantly moving ice towards the polar points. After nearly two years in the pack ice, the two men leave the board. With two sledges, draught-dogs and skies on their feet, they headed for the polar point. After 24 days on the pack ice, towards the north, they were forced to turn. They headed south, on skies over the polar ocean, towards Norway. The 24th of July 1895 they see land. It is Franz Josefs Land. There they winter in a mud cave. The 13th of august 1896 they reach Vardø. They were welcomed as heroes. The heroes were Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930), the definite leader of polar exploring and Hjalmar Johansen (1867-1913), the youngest participant of the expedition.

The theatre performance POLAR is inspired by Nansen and Johansens wintering on Franz Josefs Land. For nine moths they shared the same sleeping bag waiting for the summer and daylight. POLAR is a show that puts focus on one part of the Norwegian history using our time's language and effects
